Updating Chessware
How Chessware updates itself, how to verify a download manually, and what to do when an update fails.
How you hear about updates
- the Update Chessware card inside the app;
- the Downloads tab of your dashboard (version, size and SHA-256 checksum);
- the changelog and our Discord server.
In-app updates
Press Update Chessware. The app downloads the new build, verifies its size and SHA-256 (and its publisher signature once we code-sign builds — mismatched files are deleted, never run), replaces itself and restarts you still logged in. Your license, settings and injected-menu preferences carry over.
Manual updates
If you prefer, download the build from the Downloads tab and replace your old Chessware.exe. You can verify the download yourself:
Get-FileHash .\Chessware.exe -Algorithm SHA256
Compare it with the checksum on the Downloads tab.
Something went wrong
- "The download didn't match." — a checksum mismatch; delete the file and try again. If it repeats, tell support.
- An unsigned build — don't run it; tell support.
- "Updated. Start Chessware again to finish." — the old version restarted the new one; just open Chessware.
- The old version back? — updates replace the previous exe (
Chessware.exe.oldis cleaned up on the next start). Your device lock is unaffected; only a different PC needs a device reset.
