Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about refunds, using Chessware on more than one PC, sharing keys, Chessware Lite, Discord, your data, updates, payments and fair play.
Buying and refunds
Can I get a refund?
In some cases. You can request a refund within 14 days of purchase if the key hasn't been activated. Activated keys generally aren't refundable, except where the law requires it or if Chessware doesn't work on a supported system and support can't fix it. Refunded keys are revoked. Full details are in our Refund Policy.
Which payment methods can I use?
Payments are handled by Stripe. The payment methods available to you are shown at checkout. We never see or store your card number.
When does my license time start?
When you first log in to Chessware with your key, not when you buy it. See License keys.
Licenses and devices
Can I use Chessware on more than one PC?
Each license key works with one Discord account on one PC: the first PC you log in on. If you're moving to a new PC, ask support in our Discord server for a device reset. To use Chessware on two PCs, you'll need a key for each.
Can I share my key with a friend?
No. License keys are personal and can't be shared, given away or resold. Shared or resold keys can be revoked. See Acceptable Use & Fair Play.
I lost my license key. Where is it?
Sign in at https://chessware.net and open the Licenses tab of your dashboard. Your keys are listed there.
Chessware and Chessware Lite
What's the difference between Chessware and Chessware Lite?
Chessware is the full desktop app for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). Chessware Lite is a lighter version with fewer features that runs in your browser with nothing to install. Chessware Lite is coming soon. See What is Chessware?
Why does Chessware need an internet connection?
It checks your license key with our server when it starts and every few minutes while it runs. That's how keys stay tied to one PC and how expired or revoked keys stop working.
How do I update Chessware?
Download the latest version from the Downloads tab of your dashboard and run it. Your key keeps working on the same PC. See Updating Chessware.
Account and data
Do I need a Discord account?
Yes. Sign-in is with Discord only, and there are no Chessware passwords. Signing in also gives you the Member role in our Discord server, which is where you can get support.
What data do you collect?
Your Discord profile basics (user ID, username, avatar and email), your onboarding answers, license usage (including an anonymous one-way hardware fingerprint), purchase records, download history and short-lived security logs. We don't use tracking or advertising cookies, and we don't sell your data. See our Privacy Policy.
How do I delete my account?
In your dashboard, go to Account → Danger zone → Delete account and type DELETE to confirm. This revokes your keys and deletes your data, and it can't be undone. See Deleting your account.
Fair play
Can I use Chessware during online games or tournaments?
Not where outside help is forbidden. Chessware is for training and analysis. Don't use it to get assistance during live games on any platform or in any event that forbids it. You're responsible for following each platform's rules. See Acceptable Use & Fair Play.
